Stories About Us is a series of three short plays adapted from the works of writer Salwa Bakr. In these three plays, we witness snapshots from the lives of three different Egyptian families that center around the overarching theme of cultural deterioration in middle-class Egypt.
The first story is that of Shaker and Samia, a newly married couple in the 70s in Egypt. We see them over the decades and we see the deterioration of their marriage juxtaposed against the deterioration of Egyptian culture.
In the second story, we meet a family waiting at the airport for their son coming back from the US. He is recently married to an American woman and they all fantasize about how their life will improve with the inclusion of an American woman in their family.
The third story is set in a family room where three sisters discuss marriage as they await the arrival of a suitor for the youngest. The meeting is catastrophic and the youngest sister enters an empty stage and talks about her reservations about getting married.
I also want to take a moment here to show appreciation for Madame Samah our in house seamstress at AUC, anything built in any show there was done by her. Without her most people would be walking around naked.
